Huahine, the Authentic!

The island of Huahine belongs to the Leeward Islands in the Society Archipelago. It is located 34 kilometers away from Raiatea and 167 kilometers away from Tahiti.

It consists of two mountain ranges, Huahine Nui (“big Huahine”) and Huahine Iti (“small Huahine”), separated by Maroe and Bourayne but connected by an isthmus. Huahine Nui peaks at 669 meters with the Mount Turi. As to Huahine Iti, it only has one volcano, whose summit reaches 460 meters, the Pohue Rahi.

The coral reef has emerged on the northern and eastern coasts, making it an elevated atoll.

Agriculture is part of the landscape of  Huahine’s economy. Indeed, vanilla, melons and watermelons are grown mainly on motus (islets) alongside with the production of Coprah (coconut dried meat) just as well fishery.

The island’s main city and capital, Fare, is on Huahine Nui.

Often defined as secretive, authentic or untouched, the island is a subtle mix of landscapes, legends and typical Polynesian atmosphere. It combines lush panoramas with the meeting of locals who have remained warm and welcoming. Huahine ensures endless relaxation and captivating adventures!

It is certainly an island and place in which to live!

Tour the island to discover “maraes” (former places of worship), the salt lake of Fauna Nui, the sacred blue-eyed eels, fishing villages, fish parks and beautiful white sand beaches.

Take a stroll through the small village of Fare, walk through its alleys, the local market and meet its inhabitants with genuine kindness. From the port, take a look at the mountains further south and you will discover the silhouette of a pregnant woman facing the sky, the symbol of the island.

Visit a pearl farm, learn graft techniques and carry on with a visit to a vanilla grove where the owners will share their know-how of hand pollination of vanilla flowers (Vanilla Planifolia or Orchid Vanilla). Don’t leave without tasting homemade ice cream or fresh coconut water!

Immerse yourself in the history, culture and legends of the island and French Polynesia by visiting the Maeva Museum, a traditional “fare” (house) turned into a museum-built on an ancient site of worship, the “marae”.

Choose one or even several activities offered by the local professionals. Between the Crossing of the island in 4×4, diving, a kayak trip, a sunset cruise, a jet ski tour, hiking or water tours, just make your choice!
